1908 - "New Academy"
Print Article The new school year of 1908 opened with an enrollment of 96 boarders. In February, the pupils of the Academy presented the play "Portia," and one great applause and praise from the entire community. Owing to its religious atmosphere, the play made a deep impression on both Catholics and non-Catholics.
On Ascension Day, 56 children received their First Holy Communion. Nine graduates received their teachers’ certificates on graduation day, June 18. In this same month, the first Alumnae Association was formed and numbered 51 members. On September 9 the new school year opened with 80 boarders and 200 day pupils. Inspector Downey from the Department at Lincoln visited our school in November. He examined the school and approved of it as a Normal Training School. In December, St. Mary's was accredited by Professor Voss, that is, the graduates of St. Mary’s are entitled to enter the University without examination. The First Grade Certificate conferred on the Normal graduates of St. Mary's entitles them to enter the University.
Another great favor was granted us by the citizens of O'Neill, namely, the closing of the street, west of the convent, to provide building space for the new academy in contemplation. St. Mary's was incorporated November 23, 1908.
